The Macallan Rare Cask is the very embodiment of The Macallan’s commitment to exceptional wood management. It is a remarkable whisky: a combination of rich knowledge, skill, passion, commitment, and creativity.

Rare Cask is a new addition to the company’s 1824 Series of core expressions, which do not bear an age statement. Like the four others in the range—Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby—it allows Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan’s highly skilled Master Whisky Maker, to choose casks that contribute to the individual whisky’s flavour, rather than being constrained by the requirement that it be of a specific age.

Crafted from 16 different cask styles, the broadest spectrum of cask profiles ever used to make a single Macallan whisky, Rare Cask imparts unique influences resulting in a drinking experience that is both rewarding and incomparable. The cask styles are individually handpicked for the character they impart to the Macallan spirit, some casks are so rare they will never be used again.

Bob Dalgarno selected the barrels that go into Rare Cask from mostly first-fill sherry casks that have been maturing at the distillery. Bob said: “Of more than a thousand barrels, aged in the industry's finest most exclusive and expensive casks, only 1 per cent of the whiskies made the cut and were chosen for their colour and depth of flavour.” Furthermore, the bottles are presented in a swanky gatefold box.

With an ABV of 43 per cent, Rare Cask has a mahogany red colour. The aroma has soft notes of opulent vanilla and raisin that pique the nose, giving way to a sweet ensemble of apple, lemon and orange. It is all balanced by a spicy quartet of root ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. As for the palate, this spicy quartet is unwatering. Oak resonates, timeless, polished and rich. Vanilla and chocolate lead the finale along with a light citrus zest. Finally, it leaves a full and warming finish.
