One of many favourites among whisky lovers and whisky communities in the capital city is Glenmorangie, The Lasanta. The elegant and full-bodied single malt whisky has been matured in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks after a minimum of 10 years in ex-bourbon casks. Its luscious, mouth-filling, with deep, enticing, sweet aromas of spiced orange and chocolate-covered hazelnuts, makes it an enjoyable dram to savour with friends.

Made for those who see life in technicolour and dare to do things differently in order to find their joy, Glenmorangie’s single malt whiskies will be best to represent those who just discovered the world of whisky and are seeking a delicious one. Thanks to the plethora of whisky communities in Jakarta, learning and appreciating whisky has become more accessible.

It’s no secret that whisky is a respected luxury drink, not just in the Western world, but also in the Far East including Jakarta.

This growing number of nightlife bars has started a trend towards appreciation of the finer things in life, and whisky has slowly risen to prominence as the new beverage of choice amongst the increasingly local spirit enthusiasts.

Though it is a much enjoyed brown spirit, by no means assume that whisky has earned its good reputations in Jakarta. The increasing awareness and appreciation of whisky here is the result of the untiring efforts of several far-sighted individuals who have committed the best years of their lives spreading the good word of whisky in Jakarta.

Indonesia Whisky Research Society or IWRS is the pioneer of whisky movement in the capital city. Established in 2017 by five strangers who met in a whisky convention in Singapore, the club aims to break the stereotype of whisky as an old-fashioned tipple, favored mainly by gentlemen of vintage years and elite connoisseurs with specialist knowledge. The community also has the vision for the people of Indonesia and beyond be able to make educated, conscious decision when selecting drinks, through many activities such as whisky pairing dinner, bar hopping and workshops.

“In recent years, we have seen many younger generation of drinkers discover both classic single malts and blends and the new whiskey varieties. At IWRS, we want to encourage our members to make educated, conscious decision when selecting their drinks,” said Felix Koendharto, leader of IWRS.

Besides IWRS, The T. Whisky Club by Tatler Indonesia, offers similar programs for whisky enthusiasts to learn from each other.

“More than just an ordinary drinking club, T.Whisky Club is a platform filled with kindred souls who are connected by a common interest and a wish to share the joy of whisky around the world, from the taste and history to their honest review and experience,” said one of the members Howard Brawidjaya.

Christopher Kevin Susindra, another important personality in Jakarta’s whisky movement and co-founder of IWRS said, “With the platforms that are available now, learning about whisky can be fun and casual, through good contents and writings.”

When it comes into enjoying whisky, particularly single malt, the three of them said that they love a glass of Glenmorangie. The scent of citrus and ripening peaches, softened by the aroma vanilla makes it fun to savour on every occasion, perfect for get-togethers or even enjoyed alone.

While Harold and Felix love to enjoy the light texture and fragrant aroma, a glass of Glenmorangie is more personal for Kevin. Back in 2012, it was one of the whiskies that converted him to become an enthusiast.

“Glenmorangie has a subtle and mellow taste, that's just delicious and perfect for easy drinking. A lot of non-whisky drinkers I know including myself have converted to whisky because of Glenmorangie. I think that’s one of its strong points,” explained Kevin.

Kevin emphasized that for those who are new to whisky and want to try a glass or two, Glenmorangie is the best choice to try at home or with friends. So, what better way to start your single-malt journey than with Glenmorangie?
